Randy Thom has been working in sound since 1971, first in public radio as a producer and engineer, then as a film sound engineer and designer beginning in 1978. He has been nominated for twelve Academy Awards® for his work in film sound, and received two Oscars®, one for The Right Stuff, and the other for The Incredibles. He's also been nominated for an Emmy and a Grammy. This year he will be awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
His other film credits include such diverse projects as Apocalypse Now directed by Francis Coppola, Never Cry Wolf directed by Carroll Ballard, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi directed by Richard Marquand, Wild at Heart directed by David Lynch, Mars Attacks directed by Tim Burton, Spaceballs directed by Mel Brooks, Contact directed by Bob Zemeckis, Snow Falling On Cedars directed by Scott Hicks, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire directed by Mike Newell.
Randy will present on Sunday evening and is okay with missing the Oscars® as, alas, this year he is not nominated for anything.
