Barbara Bernstein is an independent radio producer based in Portland, Oregon. For over twenty years, Barbara has been producing radio documentaries and features on environmental issues. Some examples include The Malling of America (1999), an examination of urban sprawl in the new West, Rivers That Were (2002), a comparison of the industrialization of the Colorado and Columbia River systems and Salmonlands (2005), a portrait of how salmon have shaped the landscape, culture and community of the Pacific Northwest. Barbara's programs have been distributed by Alternative Radio, Making Contact, AIROS and Pacifica National Programming.
Barbara recently began leading a special project at KBOO-FM radio called The Whole Communities Radio Project, which looks at the connections between urban design and public health. The multi-faceted project includes live radio panel discussions with experts and activists, the production of a one-hour documentary, short feature production, the training of news and public affairs producers at KBOO and producing community events in partnership with a coalition of grassroots, environmental, health and social action organizations.
