Technology for the Masses: How to Find and Tell Important Technology Stories Under a Tight Deadline

April 23, 2009 - 5:00pm

Laura Sydell

Science, like every other discipline, is being transformed by the digital revolution. Computers offer access to vast amounts of research, nanotechnologies may help cure cancer, health care records are about to be digitized. Yet, it can be hard to discern which technologies really are significant, and it can be even harder to tell technology stories in a compelling way on radio under deadline pressure. In this workshop we will look at how to find key tech stories, sift through press releases and develop trusted sources. We'll look at how to bring these stories to life using radio storytelling techniques such as sound effects, and conversational writing and delivery, and we'll talk about how to get experts to talk about technology in ways that are understandable to the average person. We'll listen to stories that worked and failed and evaluate what made the difference.
